WORKSHOP ’LA TAMMURRIATA’, A DANCE AROUND THE VESUVIUS

Isabella Ruggiero, experienced dancer and choreographer, will introduce the participants to the cultural background of Tammurriata – a combined form of music, canto and dance – as well as to the basic techniques of dancing and drumming.

The workshop will be structured in two parts:

Part 1 – dance technique, dance etiquette, practical skills and theoretical knowledge on the rhythm of the drum Tammorra, verses, rhymes, jokes and the conventional expressions and the metrical structure of the canto.

Part 2 – Styles: we will examine the style known as “dell’Avvocata”.
The style know as “dell’Avvocata” divergs from the others for several reasons. It is the only style in Campania where you use multiple drums simultaneosly and the only Tammurriata you do on a country’s coast. The two elements are related because the dark and thundering sound of many drums played togheter formerly served as a warning and to ward off enemies who came from the coast by sea.
The style has very warlike movements taking the appearance of a real fight in the phase of the “turning”.
It is still practiced today during the Feast of Madonna dell’Avvocata on Falerzio mountain at Maiori, Salerno on the monday ater the Pentecost.
